  1. In my own opinion, I would pick someone who was succesful in a career that pertains to your major. For example, if you're going for English I would pick a famous author that inspired me to be a writer. Writing about a favorite teacher that inspired you would also be a good idea.

  2. It doesn't matter if you choose a family member or a famous person.  What matters is how that person has influenced you!  So pick someone who has made a significant contribution  to your life, your education, your dreams, your hopes of making a positive contribution  to the world, the field you would like to get into, or simply who you admire and would like to be.  I don't think they are looking for "sob" story, so please don't make up one.  You are who you are.

When writing the actual essay be personal and honest.  Don't be afraid to write the real reasons, what you truly feel.  You can edit stuff out later.  Make sure your writing is eloquent and makes sense.  Good grammar is key!  Read it to yourself aloud a few times to see if it flows.

Lastly, one way of hooking the reader from the start is to start with a quote said by the person you choose.  Make sure the quote is so good it will make the reader want to finish and that it, basically, summarizes how the person influenced.

Remember they'll get to know you not by who you choose but how that person has influenced you, how it has affected you, and how well you can write about it.  Hope that helps

  3. im pretty sure its better you write about someone you personally know

  4. I would suggest you to write something personal. Writing about famous people would not let the colleges know you. It is better to talk about people you know personally who impacted you. EX. your parents taught you responsibility, teacher taught you organization.

Read the Princeton Review College Essays. It would be a big help.

  5. Answer is in 2 parts, How to and Who is it about.

  6. I would choose someone you know personally.  Admissions already know that George Washington and whoever else had a great impact.  Tell them about a low income family you helped to build a house for one summer, or something like that.
