  1. A covering letter should be only one page, set out like a business letter and state your intention (to apply for position X)

Usual format, your address, phone fax and email numbers upper right

then their company name, address phone, fax and email aligned  left

then Attention: "person or dept named in the ad" (to respond to)

    Next Re: (job title) centred

Some words, I am very interested in your ......(job).

(butter them up a bit) I have heard very good things about your .... (practice, hospital etc) and I would be very happy to be associated with it, etc

I refer to my resume, copy attached, and as you can see, I am suitably qualified to work ....

    Finish with (a positive statement)

  3. Dear (name if you have who will be receiving it, Hiring Manager if not),

I would like to express my interest in the (position) position that your (organization, practice) is seeking to fill.  Based on my experience as a (whatever is relevant to what you're applying for), I believe that I would be an ideal candidate for the role.

Just remember this.... be short and sweet.  You are just introducing yourself, NOT summarizing your resume.  They have your resume.

My cover letter was one paragraph.  Other than the formalities, it said, "I have 3 years of experience working in a podiatrist's office."  That's the only thing I put other than the filler I gave you as an example about "ideal candidate" and stuff.  And I start tomorrow.  So I better go to bed.  But I'm addicted to Yahoo Answers!
