My boyfriend and I would like to terminate our lease this year and move, how do you write up the letter saying this to the landlord? So far I have we the residents of ................ would like to terminate our lease at the end of january 2009. It just sounds stupid but is that all we need to say?

  1. That's all you need to say.  Courteously and politely tell them that you will not be staying at their premises beyond the end of your lease term.

If you liked the place a lot, you can tell them so.

  2. If you've never done it before, it's not a stupid question.  Keep it a business letter.  To whom it may concern type letter.

    Info in the letter:

    Date you write the letter

Last date you'll be in the place (30 day notice)

and where they can send your deposit check back

    Sincerely,

    your name here

  3. Dear Mr. Landlord"

Please accept this letter as my intention to terminate my legally binding contract.  I know that I will have to pay for the termination fee/or for the full term of my lease.  Please let me know what damages you have incurred due to my breach and I will gladly pay them promptly.

    Your's truly,

    Deadbeat tenant

  4. You are giving five months notice? What's the deal?

Unless your lease has an early termination clause you must negotiate the terms. There will be a penalty. Expect to pay about two months rent unless the landlord is feeling generous.
