  1. empirical formula is in the smallest ratio while the molecular formula is in the standard form such as C2H4O2 but in empirical formula is CH2O

  2. Molecular formula: C6H6

    Empirical formula: CH

The empirical formula is the lowest whole number ratio of atoms and the molecular formula is the actual number of atoms. So for Benzene there is actually 6 Carbon and hydrogen atoms giving us C6H6 however the lowest whole number ratio is 1 Carbon atom and 1 hydrogen atom giving us CH.

Some things have the same empirical and molecular formula, particularly ionic compounds but lots of covalent compounds also have the same empirical and molecular formula.

Take KO2 for example. This is Potassium superoxide,

The empirical and molecular formula are the same because you can't reduce the subscripts anymore than that and still get a whole number.
