  1. As in all grading situations, you should try to focus on the positive aspects of each child.  If a child has a shortcoming that will affect them later, you should mention it gently.

Susie has an enthuasiasm for helping others; she keeps the teacher informed about all that the children are doing during playtime.

Ralphie is content with painting and has a very good sense of humor; he often astounds me with his Eddie Murphy impersonation.

You get the idea.  If you go to the teacher websites, you might be able to locate some more phrasing.  Good luck!

  2. I relate the comments to the stepping stones of the Foundation Stage and comment on the child's achievement towards the early learning goals.

  3. (Name), was so much fun to have in class this year!

It was a pleasure to have (Name) in my group this year!

(Name), was such a good helper in our class this year.

(Name), is such a well-mannered little (Girl or Boy).

(Name), gets along so well with other children.  I will miss (Him or Her).

I looked forward to (Name), bright sunny smile every day!

What a joy (Name) has been in our group this year.

It certainly was a pleasure to have (Name) in class this year.

We all enjoyed (Name) in our class this year.

  4. talk about how they were when they started....funny things that happened during the year....things that have learned or discovered...and then tell how much you enjoyed having the child in your class or what he or she brought to the class.

Do you do observations during the year...take them out and write down little things you observed during the year....the parents will love seeing the little notes that have real  things their child did or said or learned....For this is something most will want to save for their kids as they get older.

  5. This is funny, because I asked this question last year on yahoo questions and answers and I got slammed with comments like- " I thought the teachers really meant what they said."  The best answer I got was to let the comments come from your heart.  I just tried to add something to each child's comments that showed I really thought about that child.-not generic comments.
