My 13 year old son was hard to keep entertained when he was your son's age.  He hated being on his own and always wanted entertaining.  However, I spent some time considering my own childhood and my parents certainly didn't spend time keeping me entertained and I certainly didn't suffer for it!  fortunately as he has got older he has learned to like his own company - which I think it important - and as well he enjoys playing sport with friends, is learning to play the drums but like all kids enjoys a good video or PS2 game!

yes we used to have family times and day trips etc but for the most part I would play with friends and toys.  Nowadays though kids get entertained too much by tv pc and game consoles!

A football, a bicycle, some good friends and a safe place to play would be where I would start!

At 8 he should be able to entertain himself. If he starts with "I'm bored" - do what I do, I tell him "If your bored I have all kinds of things for you to do" and put him to work.
