I am driving from London to Champoussin for a skiing holiday - do I need a proper 4x4 or will a RWD minivan be ok? Have 6 passengers so prefer a bigger vehicle but will arrange a 7 seat 4x4 if I have to. Are the roads gritted well, and is it safe with 2wd - especially rwd?

  1. You will probably be fine, but you may well need snow-chains for whatever vehicle you use.

In France, at least, the gendarmes will not let you on to certain passes unless you have snow chains (you will not need to fit them there and then, but must have them). I don't know if this is the case in Switzerland.

Bear in mind that your GPS won't know that some of the roads are closed in winter. You can get an Alps travel map with details of typical closures, and there are websites with live information.

    Try http://www.swissinfo.org/ger/verkehrsinf...

  2. I think this is a good question. I'll try to find the answer and get back soon.
