  1. if there is an case of different subnet then yes u need an router in between then

nd yes master nd slave can have cetainly can be of  differtent ip there is nothing to do with ip when ur talking about dns server its all about packet routing iam not sure what o.s ur using this can be done via Zone tranfers in both windows nd linux in windows just right click over the dns primary zones nd click on zone transfer nd in linux in named.conf file  allow-transfer 192.168.1.1 ; } like this

but in win2k3 u need not to have an router for this u can do this by having two lan cards and configure them in remote and routing acces i did it many times this is called software  router i dont know how to do this in linux

SO bro dont get confuse be positive

    i hope this helps :-)

  2. Yes you need router to make the 2 work, the router routing tabek has to be configured/updated on where to route the IP from one block to another

  3. You don't need a router between them for name resolution per se, DNS does that.  But you do need a route (one or more routers) for them to communicate, i.e. do zone transfers.  The IP structure of each is irrelevant.  The router(s) will handle routing between the 2 subnets.
