Question:

How ugly are these countertops (pic)?

We are planning to refinish the cabinets and need ideas on what to do with the counter tops. We would like an inexpensive way to re-do these. I believe they are the original quartz. Is there a way to sand and re-color them? Or can I tile over them? Or any other creative ideas? Thanks in advance.

  1. i would stain them a cherry oak color or a really dark color to match your furniture

  2.   Counter tops look like their in ok shape just dated a bit.. I d go ahead and re do cabinets and see how a lighter color looks? I assume your lighting them up in color..   You can t resand or tile over them sorry.. get hold of a counter top guy and ask about polishing them .. If its a prefab marble type top they can be buffed and polished and make them look newer..  GL

  3. The counter tops should be more like a cream color, or even black considering how dark that wood is, rather than white... Especially where it meets with the wall, it doesn't look that great. You may be able to find nice brown tiles at a home store, and use them on the counter top, smoothing and glossing them to that counter top finish.

  4. i suggest tiling over them. you might have to spend some decent money if you want it to look good. there are three things called cheap, fast, and good. if you want it to be cheap and fast, it's not gonna be good (well might not be good). if you want it to be good and fast, it's not gonna be cheap (got that off of Bernie Mac). but anyway try going to Home Depot and stuff to find some tiles.

  5. They are pretty good and I like em' You should use them.

  6. The major chain home improvement stores stock a couple different kinds of laminate countertops that are really inexpensive, and easy to do yourself.

  7. They're not bad - it's a matter of taste. They don't look cracked or warped.

They're also not quartz, it's not used for countertops. They could be granite or Corian, but they don't look heavy enough.

They can't be refinished, and painting them is ridiculous.

You can replace them with formica from Home Depot or Lowe's very reasonably - under $100 per piece. If you go with granite or Corian, you'll pay significantly more.

Since you talk about refinishing rather than replacing the cabinets, I gather your budget is limited. Unless you really hate the countertops, why don't you refinish the cabinets with a finish that will match the existing countertops? Lighten up the look, get some new hardware and fixtures, and a couple of accents. It should do wonders for a lot less money.

  8. There are some great web sites out there on concrete countertops. You make them yourself. They are cheap to build. And it's the latest style in the Colorado Ski Town mansions that I work in.You can make them right on top of you old ones if you want, color them any coler you want and you can inlay coins, marbles,or bottle caps into the pour and even have a very shiny smooth finish that you obtain with wax

  9. yeah those cabinets are reallly ugly...
