How useful is computerized devices in agriculture?

They're very useful. For example, some farmers use a device that is kind of like a button on their cows that help them keep track of when a cow goes into estrus (or estrous I could never keep those two straight).

i think it's very helpful. i live on a farm. and the gps system on my planter/tractor is very helpful. it cuts down on the seeds i overlap, and helps on corners and things. it helps immensly.

Computers are used for just about everything on the farm these days. From record keeping to feeding each cow the exact amount of feed that she needs according to the amount of milk she gives. Planting, spraying, and harvesting all can be helped with the use of computerized equipment. With the use of soil tests, GPS, and computerized applicators the exact amount of fertilizer is given to each place in the field that needs it. None wasted and no extra to run off into streams. Farmers have been a little bit slower to use computers than other industries but are catching up. I've just touched a few things that the computer is used for in agriculture and will be used for in the future.

i'm a professor at auburn university and trust me these computers could operate a whole farm ! they can drive a tractor , even put your livestock on year-round diet program

As Buck mentioned, it is mostly limited to test equipment, though the high end harvesters and hectare sized farm equipment have a number of specialized "chip" on board devices so you know where you are, compute/ correlate harvest facts in real time, and communicate with satellite to the manufacturer any/ all running data, with feedback to you with any maintenance and repair issues.
