How valuable is a graduate certificate? ?

I am considering getting a graduate certificate in a field that is not related to my Master's. I was just wondering how much a certificate can help in my career? Is it taken into account at all?

  the paper chase is sometimes riddiculed, however in my opinion you can't have to much of it. go for it.

If your major is geology, and the certificate is in counseling, I cannot see the relationship, and therefore the value.... if your major were sociology, and the certificate were in counseling, there is less of a disconnect...more value
