  1. Vancouver is named after Captain George Vancouver, a British explorer.

  2. When the west coast of North America was being explored by the British their ship was captained by George Vancouver.  As they entered the harbour he supposedly remarked that is was a beautiful spot and such a great natural harbour that he chose to name it after himself.

The Spanish also explored the west coast and gave the name of one of their explorers to the body of water between BC and Washington State.  The Straits of Juan de Fuca lie between Victoria, BC and Port Angeles, Washington and form the entrance from the Pacific Ocean into the inside passage which eventually leads to Alaska.

  3. The city, as well as Vancouver Island, is named in honour of George Vancouver who charted the Northwest in the late 18th century.

The city of Vancouver was orginally known as Granville but later renamed to acknowledge the fact that Vancouver "discovered" and mapped the area. Vancouver also mapped the coast from California to Alaska.
