How was Eight Belles euthanized? Was it shot or injected?

Eight Belles is the horse that came in second place in the Kentucky Derby. She broke two of her ankles and was euthanized on the tracks. I just wonder how they did it.

Humanely euthanized means by injection.  They give drugs to put the horse to sleep, literally, then they give the lethal drug.

I heard she was shot on the scene. I assumed it meant with a gun because it was quicker....but I don't know if that meant 'shot with drugs' instead.

The best-case scenarios for euthanizing a horse both involve intravenous barbiturate overdose. A horse undergoing surgery can be given the overdose via the already-established IV if it becomes clear during the surgery that the horse will not survive. It is also common for a horse to be euthanized by intravenous injection outside of surgery. As soon as the drug is given, the horse loses consciousness, and its pain is relieved almost instantly. This can be a comforting thought for the owners.

Beyond these scenarios, things can get a bit more difficult. If your horse is badly injured or in significant pain it can be dangerous to attempt to use an injection. If it is in shock, its circulation may be too impaired to transport the drug to its brain and heart, and the veins may be difficult or impossible to locate to administer it. In this situation, the veterinarian may need to use a .22-caliber pistol to euthanize the animal.

oh my goodness, people are really this ignorant? she was euthanized. injected. we don't shoot horses, what the heck? this isn't 1905. and to the person with the PETA-esque rant, you need to either learn about horse racing or keep your mouth shut, because you are beginning to look REALLY stupid on here. and that's hard to do on Yahoo answers, when 90% of the people here are idiot trolls.

She got a lethal injection.  A one way ticket on the silver needle express.  My guess would be they used fatal plus....possibly beuthanasia....  Very quick, and got the poor girl out of her pain.
