  1. I spent almost 12 hours yesterday wandering around the French Quarter & central business district (while wearing a costume) and saw absolutely no problems. Just lots of happy people, most of whom had costumed (or at least decorated themselves) for Mardi Gras day. It was a great time and I am SO glad I was there.

There were apparently about 700,000 visitors to New Orleans' Carnival this year, compared with less than 400,000 last year (which was the first Carnival after Katrina - I am surprised there were 400,000). New Orleans typically received more than 1,000,000 visitors for Carnival before Katrina.

According to the New Orleans TV news, police made about 550 arrests during the last week of Carnival.  The arrests were reportedly mainly for public intoxication and similar minor violations of the law.  According to the same news report, New Orleans Police made about 450 arrests during the same period in 2006.  As I recall, New Orleans Police typically made about 1000 arrests during that period before Katrina (the arrest numbers are a standard part of the Ash Wednesdayl news reports).

This year's Carnival seemed "normal" to me, though the crowds were a bit thin - and better behaved. Carnival went really well and I suspect next year will be even better.
