    But the oldest known musical instrument is a  Neanderthal bone flute from Slovenia.

    Although I'd expect drums to go right back to Homo Erectus, they aren't usaully made of materials that stand the test of time. So far no very early drums have been found, but some ochred mammoth bone percussion instruments have been found in the Ukraine, about 15,000 years old.
