  1. By earning enough dough, in limited starts, to finish in the top 125 on the TOUR's money list.

  2. He won the National Amateur tournament for three years in College at Stanford.

  3. He finished in the top 125 on the money list.....and in 7 tournaments, an outstanding feat

  4. He qualified  in two ways..the money list and exemptions for 2 wins his first year.

1996: Turned professional at Greater Milwaukee Open, where he finished T60, and followed with two victories (Las Vegas Invitational and Walt Disney World/Oldsmobile Classic) and three top-10s in only eight starts

  5. He had sponsors exemptions when he turned professional in 1996. He won the 2nd pro tournament he entered, then won enough  money in the remaining tournaments to finish within the top 125 money winners for the year. Both criteria made him exempt from Q School.

  6. In 1996, when he turned pro, he had 7 sponsor exemptions which gave him entry into 7 tournaments.

By winning one tournament (Las Vegas), he automatically gained a two-year exemption on TOUR.  If memory serves he won a second tournament.

In addition, he won enough prize money to finish in the top 125 which guaranteed him a TOUR card for 1997.

Phil Mickelson had a similar route to the tour (i.e. he never went through Q-school).
