  1. Mainly by monks. There is a book called 'How the Irish Saved Civilisation' which argues that had it not been for Irish monkish scribes sitting in their cells  transcribing learned books from Greece and Rome  all that learning would have been lost. And you must remember that the Dark Ages weren't all ignorance. The Venerable Bede away in his monastery in Jarrow, North East England in the 7th and 8th centuries AD wrote 'The Ecclesiastical History of the English People' He knew, and quotes from, ancient writers and earlier English writers such as Gildas. The Anglo Saxons kept their 'Chronicle' or a running history of their times as did other cultures at the same time. There have always been people who want to learn and to pass on knowledge!
