Well, back up a second.  White society in America in the mid to late 19th centutry when Douglas was prolific was dichotomous.  You cant refer to white society as a singular entity in this era in history.  You have to refer to Northern white society and Southern white society.  To the Northern white society he was indeed a bridge if you want to call him that.  He was a self educated articulate ex-slave abolitionist who was literate, white abolitionists had him join their cause to instill a sense to other Northern whites that blacks were not uneducated, racially inferior chattel.  He served as a "poster child" for the Northern abolitionist cause, and aligned white and black abolitionists.  In Southern white society he was a fugitive slave in direct defiance of the law.  Depends on which society youre referring to........
