How was religion important in the settlement of the English Colonies?

  1. Well, this doesn't look like a homework question at all, now does it.

    Just to get you started, a lot of the colonies were founded by groups of people who had been persecuted for their religious beliefs. Rhode Island was founded by Roger Williams after he was banished from the Massachusetts Bay Colony for his religious views, he founded Providence and declared it to be a place of religious freedom.

    Massachusetts Bay Colony itself was founded by the Pilgrims who wanted to separate from the Church of England.

    Many of the universities that were founded in the Colonial period were founded first as religious institutions with very close ties to the various religions of the area including Harvard, Yale, Dartmouth, Brown, King's College (now known as Columbia University) and William and Mary.

  3. In some of the colonies:

    Politically - the civic council and the church were essentially one and the same.

    Economically - The church imposed taxes and in some cases controlled distribution of imports.

    Socially - the Church was the primary meeting and gathering place.  Socio-politically the church elders were often the civic leaders.
