Because he's Australlian and he does crazy stunts, the type of stunts you don't see everyday, personally i think Bear Grylls is waaaaaaaaay better than Steve, Bears a bit more practical and realistic and could actually save somebody's life with his servival skills wereas Steve just makes you do stupid stuff and look where that got him.

He made us all aware of wildlife and how they need to be protected.  He didn't just show us dangerous and deadly creatures but he made them apart of our lives.  He showed his passion in such a way that he made us have the same passion.  Finally, I think what made him an icon is because he died doing something he lived for.
