  1. drilled a hole. hey theres all kinds of documentarys on it , on how its built on tv,  i see em on a lot.

  4. The French started on their side, the British on their side, and they raced to the middle.

  5. There is a great documentary on The History Channel about the engineering involved.  The excavation equipment was built in the tunnel and was left there in a utility shaft because it was not cost effective to dismantle it.

Two specially built boring (as in drilling) machines, one from England, one from France, began boring towards each other.  Several different methods were used to keep them on track, and it worked.  They both ended up at the same exact spot.  Then the tunnel was reinforced and braced, tracks run through it, etc.
