  1. Like any other communist economy, it sucked big time.

    Good Economy = Happy People

Bad Economy = Unhappy ANGRY People

One of the reasons of the break up was its increasingly onerous conditions had dislocated the economy. The country had become utterly dependent on loans from Western banks. A year earlier, the price of continued U.S. loans and credits was a brutal austerity program that devalued the currency, froze wages, cut subsidies, closed many state industries deemed unprofitable for capitalist investors and increased unemployment. The result was strikes, walkouts, a sharp increase in political and economic tension, and, above all, an upsurge in national antagonisms on all sides.

  2. You ever heard of the car the Yugo?  Really?  Never?  That should give you a pretty good idea of how the economy was.

  3. The Yugoslavia's economy collespe during the 1980's due to the energy crisis and other factors. By the 1990's Yugoslavia's economy was a joke. The whole country started to unravel because Josip Broz Tito died in 1980. He held the role of prime minister of the country since 1953. He was the glue that held the country together.

  4. Dan  is right, also there was religious conflict involved: Muslims vs. Christians vs Orthodox Church...

Yugoslavia was profiting mainly from tourism. Especially Germans often used to visit this country, since everything was so incredibly cheap and convenient pricewise. There was no significant industrial area, except a little bit in the northern part of the country. Due to friendly weather conditions Yugoslavia focused on farming rather than on industry. As any other comunistic country, this place was greatly "occupied" by tourists from other brotherly countries=Czech Republic, Poland, East Germany, Russia.
