Any RR is important to a country.  RR move huge amounts of freight with less diesel than trucks.  They also can move military equipment for national defense.  No industrialized country could get by without the RR to move its coal, food, building supplies etc.....

It joined the east to the west before there was any other way to get from one to the other except canoe and horse travel, and the building of it was part of the reason BC consented to join eastern Canada at all.
