  1. well--many people who were unemployed moved to "hoovervilles" or small shanties on the outskirts of town. there they lived in anything from boxes to broken down cars.

Unemployed people often worked as apple vendors as well. The depression was very tough for many people in the us, and people often looked to government or local leaders for help by writing letters or telegrams, but they were almost always never  helped.

When FDR became president he had "fire side chats" on the radio, many people tuned in to hear what encouraging news the presidnent had to offer. The family radiow as often one of the last things given up because (like movies which were also popular) it offered an escape from reality. FDR also made "The New Deal." In the famous "100 days" FDR worked with congress to pass 15 new bills that would help Reform, Relieve and Recover the country by providing jobs and other accomodations. Manyy people also reffered to this as "alphabet soup" because the bills had acronyms for names (ex. NRA National Recovery Administration)

Though many of these bills did not work, and were later not used, some still exist today such as the FDIC which insures your money is safe in banks.
