  1. Early in the war, on both sides, airplanes like the Faulks and Sopwith Camels were used for reconnaissance, nothing else. Later on, when the airplane became an obvious new weapon of war, they put vickers machine guns on the front, usually 2 of them. The first bombers were also invented, primitive but bombers none the least. Men actually dropped bombs with their hands and then upgraded to use a rip cord to drop the bombs, they were not very big, as large as an artillery shell. By the end of the war, most countries adopted an air corp of some kind, in the US, it wasn't called the Air Force till after ww2. Before that, it was attached to the Army.
