How was the language of physics formed?

  1. eedro is close to it.  It was not possible to "do physics" until somebody clearly defined the relatively simple things like mass, force, density, velocity and acceleration.  If you confuse velocity and acceleration as some people still do, it is not possible to understand physics clearly and investigate it.  As far as I can see it was Sir Isaac Newton who did this, though some earlier people probably had a hand in it.  Kepler, Galileo and a few others for instance.  


  2. I will trust that you know that Physics is not a formal language that people speak to each other in passing.

    The words in physics are from a variety of different places. Latin, French , German, English and even Chinese and Japanese . It all depends on who discovers what.

    Sir Issac Newton "invented" gravity so he got to make up a word based on latin roots. I might be wong on this but i believe "grav" in latin means "to move towards" and "ity" is added on to express that the action is happening now(do know i could be wrong about the word)

    there are even symbols (Greek) that are used to display a common attribute like heat or motion or torque.
