  1. They used shovels and flashlights and fans

  2. Since this is in the train group, I will assume you mean underground trains.  And since you used underground and not subway I will assume that you are European.

Each subway was started different ways, but for the same cause.  There was not enough road space to run new trolleys, and in turn they went underground.

In the old days, the "tubes" were built one of two ways.  They dug up the street and built the tunnel, then buried it back up.  The other way was they dug through the ground with picks and shovels and hoped it didn't cave in.  After digging a few feet they lined the walls with bricks.  Modern tunnels are drilled with boring machines that line the walls with cement as the move.

  3. I'm sure you realize this but the underground railroad as discussed in your history class wasnt a railroad at all in the conventional sense of the word.

It was a way for escaped slaves to make their perilous way to freedom in the north. It was very dangerous, both for the slave and the lawbreakers that were helping them, there were a series of safehouses and secret markings and maps to help the slaves travel, mostly at night.

It was created out of need and ingenuity by caring concerned people that took grave risks to help fellow human beings that were in a desperate situation. A very bright spot in American History.
