The correct answer (for now) is:  we don't know.

The best we can do is apply all our science knowledge to how matter and energy behave, and make it all the way back to what we call the Planck Time (very, very close to time=zero, but NOT exactly zero).

At that time, the universe would have been so hot that every single point would have been a black hole.

Before that, we don't know.

We can guess.  Many conjectures, hypotheses and even a few theories have been tried.  They are difficult to test because we are not sure what the conditions would have been like before the Planck Time.

Check out M-theory and string theory for some of the more popular guesses.  There are others.

The "Big bang" - there was no bang though. It's not really an answerable question, it's open for discussion.

Scientists know how it was created, but you can't go to the very beginning (kind of like that uncertainty principle). I personally think that God's way of creating the Universe was the Big Bang. We have been expanding ever since that moment.

Who knows, maybe we are just one universe floating along with many other multiverses.
