How many job options do they give you to choose from at Basic? I have a 82 on my ASVAB and my composite score for mechanical is a 97 and a 96 for electrical . I am going in under Open Mechanical. I want to do SOMETHING with the aircraft not constuction or anything civil engineering related.

  1. My husband is active duty AF for 6 years.  He loves his job, though a tad stressing.  He's in supply fyi.  I think you have to talk to the job coordinator.  I have heard things, from friends who are enlisted that recruiters will promise you the world, but can't keep it.  I think it would be wise to talk to someone who is active but not a recruiter telling you the ins and outs.  Good luck and HOORAH for AF!

  2. Well first, 60 percent of everyone who enlist in the Air Force, enlist under the Open Area option.

As to how many jobs you have to choose from,

That varies each and every week.

You will be limited to those jobs that have Tech School class's starting within two weeks of you graduating basic training.

Unless it is a job in high demand, like EOD, combat control, para rescue or Sere.

Then you can have a longer wait time after basic.

Since you enlisted under open mechanical,

They will offer you every mechnical area job that has a Tech School opening within two weeks of you graduating basic.

Notice I said opening, some class's will already be filled and they will not offer those.

I was offered around 14 different jobs, then had to list my top 5 in order, I recieved my first choice.

A link to all mechanical area jobs is posted below.
