  1. Three years ago my husband and I took a 10 day Panama canal cruise on Holland America's Rotterdam. We had never taken a cruise before and we really enjoyed ourselves. Getting to see all the sites but not have to drive or pack was great. Top of mind observations:

    1. Yes the rooms are small but they are clean and well maintained and you dont spend much time there anyway.

    2. The food was spectacular. There was an evening chocolate buffet that we still dream about.

    3. The people on the cruise are OLD (not that there's anything wrong with that). We in our mid thirties were nearly the youngest passengers on the ship. Our parents who accompanied us were the next youngest.

    4. When you're at the bar or lounge "charge it to the room" adds up REALLY fast.  The ship had a duty free store on board and we were able to bring drinks back onboard from the local ports. This made a big difference in the cost of the trip for us.

    5. Holland America is one of the better cruiselines; we had a gym and spa services, a movie theatre, nightly entertainment, a classical trio playing in the lounge, great food and fantastic service. Plus free tote bags!

    6. We decided against booking the excursions through the cruise ship and did our own thing (hired a taxi with another couple instead of booking on a bus tour, etc) Most of the time this worked out well; we got a more personal experience, at our own pace, for a better price.

    Enjoy your trip!
