  1. Pretty good. They created the setting and the situation they wanted, so life was good.

  2. There are various opinions about this; the theology was extremely strict

(dancing was a criminal offense and bordered on witchcraft) and the punishments very harsh. At first the government was theocratic, but it had a limited reach, and despite the best efforts of the preachers Puritans and the Pilgrims drank copious quantities of hard cider and ale. No one denies that women were expected to be humble when encountering men; by the English common law of the time the husband had all the rights and was actually encouraged to beat his children and his wife.

They had to import all the iron tools and glassware that they lacked. Massachusetts (which included Maine at the time) exported white pine and oak to the British navy, which had an insatiable appetite for both (white pine for masts and rigging, oak for the beams and decks).

People in country settlements made their own furniture, built their own houses, carved their own tableware, cleared their own land, and so forth. The cold winters of New England were a shock to the early settlers and required some adaptation. But people in the country were very well fed, which was not the case at all in most of Europe. In New England the streams and rivers were full of fish, the forests full of game, and the dairying was very productive.

At first the Pilgrims and the Puritans tried to be fair (in their own eyes) to the Native Americans, but the cultural gap was enormous. Soon the settlers despised Native Americans and virtually exterminated them.

  3. hard & boring

  4. Religion played an important role in Puritan life. Arthur Miller’s, The Crucible, reflects how the Puritan lifestyle should be lead. However, some did not live up to those expectations and later suffered the consequences by either imprisonment or death.

In the Puritan lifestyle every man, woman, and child was expected to attend the meeting on the Sabbath without question. Puritans were required to read the Bible which showed their religious discipline. If they didn't read the Bible, it was thought that they were worshiping the devil. They were supposed to be acquainted with and abide by the Ten Commandments
