How we can measure the effectiveness of advertising?

We need ways and methods of measueing edvertising effecvieness. please let us know how we can do this.

You did not mention the  type of advertising you are doing. I hear all the time in the Radio that if you mention the name of their radio station , for example, you get another 10% discount. this way you can actually count the number of people who come to your location because of that advertisement. your question has to be more specific in the type of ad you are running.

also, I think that ads usually do not work the first or the second time. you have  to have a budget for your ads and run them continuously to see a good result.

Regarding internet advertisement there are statistics. You can compare amount of hits on the add with succesfull sell of the product you advertise.

I always ask the client, how did you here about us? This gives me an idea as to whats working, when and where. Duplicate the strong areas, and modify or get rid of the weak ones.

It depends on what you do, but chances are it's to get people to buy the product.  One would measure sales vs the advertising to see if it was effective.  If you advertise you are having a special on a certain date, the number of sales should increase on those dates.  You may continue to do well after the special as people sampled your product and liked it.

Another reason people advertise is for name recognition.  People use IPod as a generic name for a MP3 player.  People order Coke when they really want Pepsi.  You might say Kleenex instead of tissue.  For such advertising results you would do polls to see if people remember your ad.
