  1. By magnetic effect or by reverberation effect. Different tools for using these effects are with plumbers


  2. depends on what you are doing?? if adding on or something you need to do demo on the place and then you will most times come accross it!! also most plumbers put the pipe in as straight of a line as possible so they dont need to do alot of fitting and having the possibility of leaks.... so if a pipe is running straight up from the basement for example.... you can be sure that it is in the room right above it,,, and that room is a kitchen or bath!!!

  3. There is a tool called a (fox and hound) or the technical word is tone generator and inductive amplifier.  you clip the tone generator to the pipe (must be metal) and use the amplifier on the wall.  the closer you are to the pipe the louder it will be.  but you still need to have a general idea where to look.  if the Amp is more than 12 inches away you won't hear anything, and if the metal pipe is hooked to other metal pipes, then they will all have a signal.  so some skill is still required.
