How well are "Otaku" known in your state/location?

If you don't know what "Otaku" that's okay you don't need to look it up.

if you do however just post that you do and your state.

As far as I know Otaku means something like 'obsessed fan of something' and is often mistaken for 'pervert' due to it being introduced to the west by Japanese animation that played to extreme Western tastes rather than general Japanese animation around 10-15 years ago?

I don't live in a state, county is Suffolk, Great Britain.
