Question:

How well do YOU tip??

Hi, I am a full time student and a server and I have a question for you all. In my experience of working as a server, I have only been jipped one time out of a tip (they didn't leave anything, group of teenagers). I would like to know how many people actually know that servers in most places only make 2.15 an hour without tips and that we rely on your tips to pay our bills. How many people don't believe in tipping at all, no matter how good the service, or they have a limit on to which they tip, no matter how big the bill?

I'm interested to see the responses. Thanks!!! :)

  1. i believe in tipping but that's because I'm a cook and i don't make that much but i make more than the waitresses do but they only make 3.50 an hour and i see where your coming from people should tip the waitress i always leave 10 dollars if its just me eating

  2. i tip over 20% ever time i was a server once and it sucks when you get less!!

  3. I overtip, even if the service is horrible.  If you wait on me you get at least 20% and if you were really really bad you might, though it's rare only get your outdated 15%.  I am guilt driven.

  4. I just don't understand how the restaurant industry gets away with paying servers WELL under minimum wage.  Why is it up to the customer to pay the wages - when most oftentimes the food can be a pretty hefty price just starting out?

I tip 15% of the bill, and don't tip for take-out orders.  If the person did an absolutely phenomenal job, I'll sometimes go up to 20%.

  5. I thought everyone got at least min wage and didn't realize they could still do that to servers. but min wage doesn't pay the bills either. so....

my dad's generation only tip 10 percent.

I tip 15 percent, depending on different factors of course

If I plan to eat there often, I tip well, hoping for better service in the future.

  6. I thought they make less.   Everyone should tip.

  7. Well I'm a good tipper, I tip 30% of what ever i comsume and tip more if i get an extra good service

  8. 15%. Its the tax in my area, so it's easy to work out. More for good service, less for bad, and I'm not against not tipping total dics.

Just being a server does not guarantee tips, if you need them to live get a better job. People deserve to treat themselves once in a while, and if you can't understand that then you must be a really cranky waiter.

P.S. Where do you live that you make 2.15? At Dairy Queen I made 10.50 and tips...

  9. Yes shame on me.I suck at tipping. Not always do I tip 15%.I just can't see leaving a big tip at an all you can eat Chinese Restraunt. All they do is take away your dirty plate and some don't even worry about filling your coke glass.Yes I should tip. Also if you can't understand them and they don't talk to you the personal connecftion is not there. Yes if the service is good then I tip good. Sorry in advance Wait Staff!!!!

  10. Well I am a generous tipper if the service was good. I usually tip 8-10.00  for  a meal. The pizza guy gets 5.00  but there has been times when my money is real short and I have left a lousy tip but not because I wanted to and I felt bad. I do realize that you make your money from tips and its a hard job so when I have the money and if I have a decent server they will get tipped well. If I was rich Id leave even a bigger  tip like 20's or 50's but I'm not so, I do what I can.  I have a big heart like that and I know what its like to struggle.

Its a shame more people dont tip as well. Especially if they have it. But you know chances are they were born with a silver spoon in there mouth and they dont know what its like to live week to week.

  11. I usually tip a minimum of 20%, even my 13 year old son tips well. He makes sure to leave a good tip when ever he treats. He always notices when my bestfriends boyfriend leaves an insufficient tip, and asks me to throw more money on the table, which I do.  He know's that a boy who tips well makes  a great impression with the girls.  Besides, when you tip well, especially when you frequent a place your servers well remember and always take good care of you.

  12. i always tip CRAZILY high but that just because im a server and i now how it is. I dont expect someone whos never been a server to tip 30 -35% like me haha. But i can tell you the only time i would leave a bad tip is if the server is out right rude to me. What most people dont realize is that 90% of the time if something went wrong with their dining experience it is the fault of the cooks, expo's(the people in the kitchen who check the food before it leaves the kitchen), or a problem in the kitchen like frozen chicken breats that take far to long to cook.

Another thing i think people dont realize is that server have to "tip out" at the end of the night.

    Explaining tipping out-

I work at Chili's in Ohio and my hourly wage is $3.50, and for the record im not one of those servers who complains about 3.50 and hour because when i add in my tips i make anywhere between $8 to $30(on a great night) an hour after doing the math. but back to tipping out, at my work at the end of the night we have to tip out 3% of our sales, 1% to the busser, 1% to the expo, and 1% to the bartender.  so say on an average night my sales are 700 dollars, that means at the end of the night i have to tip out 21 dollars. so for anyone who leaves a dollar for a tip, you need to realize that your server basically just paid for you to eat at their table. ouch

  13. I always tip more than 20%.  I like to over-do it because I -know they rely on the tips.  If you can't tip-THEN ORDER TAKE OUT!!!

  14. Oh yeah, I know what you mean. I was a server, too.

Now I tip especially well because I know how hard it is to live off people's cheap tips.

Do people ever like, take all the coins out of the bottom of their purses and tip you with them? GOD that is so annoying. IF YOU didn't want your spare change, why would I?

The best part was, at Christmas time people start feeling generous. But after the season is over, they really don't give a c**p about you. No matter how nice or perfect your service was. They don't realize that we make less than HALF of minimum wage and that is pretty much all taxed.

To the people who have never worked as a waiter/ress, if you can't afford to tip your server, you can't afford to eat at a restaurant! Go to McDonalds!

  15. I usually always tip,  a standard 15%, but it usually depends on the service...  I leave alittle more, depending..

  16. I always tip at least double the  tax of the final bill even if the service was the worst in the world. If it is better I give more. ^^ That is just how I do it.

When I eat out with my friends I make them tipp as well.

  17. it all depends on the service....

  18. That's not nice of the teenagers to do that. I'm a HUGEE tipper...Me an my whole family tip a lot. We feel guilty and bad if we dont..=]

  19. 15%, as requested

  20. My tip is usually 25% or upwards 60-75% on occasion. (I have a ton of money to throw around, might as well make someone elses' life better).

Attractive servers warrant a higher tip, especially female servers that flirt with the table. Unattractive, cocky or quiet servers will mostly receive lower tips, especially if they provided bad, or no, service.

Teenagers are usually terrible at tipping anyway, limited by their 'allowance', or in other cases, their awful math skills.

  21. I am a server and a student too. I make $2.13 an hr. I get jipped a lot because I don't think people realize that we don't make minimum wage. I was waiting on this one couple a few nights ago and they mentioned to me that they don't like to tip because they feel like the restuarant makes enough off of food and drinks, that they should pay more to their employees. They don't feel like they should pay the server's wages. Me being a server I usually leave atleast $10 bucks because I know what it feels like to get a pay check that has a VOID on it.

  22. i always tip more than 10%, thats the servers income and its not fair to just leave a dollar or something like that!wtf

  23. I tip according to service, the dining experience starts at 20% 25 for exceptional service and the tip can go as low as 5% unless the service was EXCEPTIONALLY BAD then I have been known on a rare occassion to stiff or leave a penny.

  24. I always tip over 20% I am an ex server and  there is a special section of h**l reserved for servers who jip other servers. I don't want to take the chance :)

  25. I tip a minimum of $5  for lager bills I tip 20% of the total of the bill, I used to be a manager of a resteraunt and know what its like.  I understand and feel for you.   Good Luck

  26. Goddamn, I hope no one thinks that. I rely on tips heavily as well. I've not been tipped much more than just once, however. Some people will just never tip or ever be happy with the service they receive. I don't mind it so much if the customer is relatively nice and pollite. I'd rather not get a tip from a jackass.

  27. I TIP all the time ,,last diner ;olive garden , server ,,rec a ten dollar tip ,,,it also depends where you work ;; smile ,be polite.offer suggestions;on the menu,,thank them ..why,, their paying,,might hint look at other diners with high customers;;; volume;;
