How well do identity protection programs work?

If you are enrolled in an identity protection program, tell me which one you're enrolled with, how well they do their job, and if you have any experiences where they practically saved your life.

The only thing they do, is put fraud alerts on your accout with the three big credit companies.  You can do that with about an hour of time, for free.
