I'm writing a story about some wolves, but I need to find out the type of wolves they should be.

I just know that I want the wolves to live in an area that has snow sometimes or all the time, and I want them to be gray-coloured, preferably light grey.

So what kind of wolves fit this description? Any suggestions or opinions? Any other information would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

  1. The grey wolf

  2. Eastern timber wolves (Canis lupus lycaon [i think]), Mackenzie Valley wolves, British Colombian wolves.

BC wolves are generally darker in color, though.

  3. There are three species of wolf - the grey wolf (Canis lupus), of which there are various subspecies, the red wolf (Canis rufus), and the Ethiopian wolf (Canis simensis). I presume your story is about grey wolves - this is the animal most people think of when they hear the word 'wolf'. The Arctic wolf (Canis lupus arctos) lives in an environment which is snowy for more of the year than any other subspecies, but Arctic wolves are all white, and you mentioned you want your wolves to be grey. I would suggest the Alaskan wolf (Canis lupus pambasileus), which is the largest subspecies, or the Canadian wolf (Canis lupus occidentalis). Note that you can get black, white and brown individuals as well as grey in any subspecies (except the aforementioned Arctic wolf).
