How well do you sleep in a cabin on an overnight ferry? Should I avoid this if I have to work the next day?

I am thinking of a day trip from Portsmouth to Caan (UK to France) with a return overnight in a cabin. Will I get a good night's sleep do you think?

  1. I've always slept well on a ferry - of course, it could be something to do with the Stugeron travel pill washed down with a brandy - a trick I discovered on a weekend trip from Cyprus to Israel - zonked out like a light and woke just as we were pulling into Haifa docks in the morning!  The Greeks also pour very generous portions of brandy!!

It also works if you have to sleep on the boat floor under a table (experience of Brittanny Ferries messing up our cabin booking, but fortunately, I'd taken my mummy sleeping bag into the ship from the car deck)

  2. it only takes about 2-3 hours get there anyyway, then you have get off, so wont get much sleep, may as well stop in the bar for 3 hours and watch tv, and save your money on a cabin.

  3. I think it's very much a personal thing at first I slept very poorly, but over the years I've noticed I sleep much better when travelling on ships.

  4. it all depends on the price !!!!!!!!!!

the cheaper the price the more noise there is.

if you go for a sleep seat or standard berth then you are normally down in the bowels near to the engine room and the " thump, thump " of the engines is really loud.

if you get a cabin then try and get one as near to the top deck and as far forward as you can, away from the engines.

no matter where you go there is always the  "thump ", but the further away you are the better.

wait until you get on board and try and get an upgrade to  sleep by yourself, the ferries will put at least two in a cabin, total strangers, if you don,t pay for single occupancy or an outside cabin which at least you have some sort of view.

at least pompey to caen is,nt too long compared with some but at least give yourself a little bit of luxury/privacy
