Question:

How well does a hoop house work in the shadow of a mountain?

I'm thinking of buying a property that lies on a 15% grade facing to the north, in Pennsylvania. There is a mountain ridge to the south that blocks out 18 degrees of the southern sky.

Is this orientation likely to be a serious impediment to getting productivity in vegetables from the hoop house? Or for other plants grown outside the greenhouse, for instance, plums?

The soil is deep and well drained.

  1. I do not actually understand those numbers very well. But if u get 6 or more hours of sunlight a day, the stuff will grow okay.

My plum tree does not take freeze well. i have only got plums one year out of 8 that i have noticed. my area is not as cold as yours i am pretty sure. Other varieties may be different since that is how it is for most fruit trees; some varieties will be able to tolerate different cold than others.
