Question:

How well will Tsuga Canadensis (Canadian Hemlocks) do in full sun in hot weather?

neighbor had sawn down a bradford pear tree which had given them partial shade. now they just are exposed to full sunlight in hot summer weather ?and btw the specific zone is 6.

any other suggestions besides watering them very good?

  1. The Tsuga (tree mother in japan) generally will not thrive under hot, extremely dry conditions. They do not take wind very well either. In a natural setting such as here in Montana with Western Hemlock, it is considered a late succesion species, which means that it thrives after a forest canopy is achieved. Eventually it will grow past the Doug Fir and Larch to dominate the forest canopy and continue on as a dominant old growth species.  Its ability to withstand shade is its specialty, full sun is it's kryptonite. Sorry. My best advise is to give it some help with a fast growing shade tree. They will probably hang on and suffer until then. good thick mulch too...Better yet, transplant them this fall to the darkest spot you got:)
