Maine was named after the Maine region in NW France, but later interpreted as signifying its status as the main part of the New England region.

Illinois was named after the Illinois Indians that lived in N Illinois, S Wisconsin, and parts of Iowa and Missouri.

The area of Illinois was orginallly called Island noise, and was then shortened to Illinois. Original settlers of Maine were so isolate, that they thought by calling the area, The Maine Area, they could trick others into moving there.  The idea didn't work all that well, but they decided to stick with the name Maine.

There is no definitive answer for the origin of the name Maine. The state legislature in 2001 adopted a resolution establishing Franco-American Day, which stated that the state was named after the ancient French province of Maine. Other theories mention earlier places with similar names, or claim it is a nautical reference to the mainland. Whatever the origin, the name was fixed in 1665 when the King's Commissioners ordered that the "Province of Maine" be entered from then on in official records

The state is named for the French adaptation of an Algonquian language (perhaps Miami) word apparently meaning "she speaks normally"  Alternately, the name is often associated with the indigenous Illiniwek people, a consortium of Algonquian tribes that thrived in the area. The name Illiniwek is frequently (incorrectly) said to mean "tribe of superior men" or "men". Both etymologies are unworkable.
