I would like information pertaining to the 29th Infantry Division in World War 2, by the way.

Was one medic assigned to each platoon? Each company? Exactly what organization did the medic fall under? Was he officially attached to the HQ section of a platoon, or designated as part of a squad?

Any information you have to offer I'm sure would help me.

Also, any other facts about the makeup of a 29th Infantry Division unit (mainly smaller units, like squads, platoons, and companies, maybe battalions) would be helpful, just little tidbits. Thanks!

  1. Medics were assigned by battalion and by company.  It depended on the type of unit.  If it was an infantry unit medics were assigned down to companies and would usually stay with them until the end of the war or the end of their life.  A medic would be attached to company HQ as he served the entire company not just a specific part of the company.

As for the infantry division.   Companies would have 3-4 platoons, platoons had 3 squads.  Squads would have 6-10 soldiers.

  2. The link below is to the web site of that division's historical society. They have a "contact us" feature where you can get answers from the ones who had "been there and done that".
