  1. I don't know much about Spain, but I'm Ukrainian and I can tell you about Ukraine.

    Ukraine pronounced "Ukraїna" in Ukrainian. "kraїna" means "land", "country". "Ukraїna" = "inland".

    User "farfel" told you a funny story, but it is completely false. The idea that Russians originated from fertile Ukraine and then willingly moved out to the cold and swapmy northern forests to be closer to their enemies tartars is a bit weird. And originating a Ukrainian word from Russian language is somewhat q***r also.


  2. off the top of my head:

    Spain comes from Hispania, what the Romans called this part of their Empire;

    and Ukraine comes from the Russian word for "borderland", "outlying province", or "edge of the country", something like that. as it was explained to me once Ukraine was the area where the Russians started out in, but when they migrated north, their original grounds became "Ukarine"...
