How were all the mentally retarded people around the 1950's treated?

 They were called rude names, were stereotyped by all, and were not understood. The scientists did treat the mentally disabled very unjustly to a normal person in their eyes during experiments, but the only reason they did that was because they had no understanding of their handicap. They didn't think the mentally disabled were real people and that they had no feelings or thoughts
