I know how poor and middle class children were educated in 1940 but in school, they never mentioned the rich. Were taught at home or did they go to a private school?

  1. First of all, I have to make it clear that, in Britain they use the term "public school" instead of "private school". A Public school in Britain is an expensive and usually prestigious independent fee-paying school. What Americans or Europeans or the rest of the world call a public school is a "state school" in Britain, despite the fact that they don't have states as Americans would understand them.

The most famous "public schools" in U.K are Eton, Harrow, Winchester and Westminster. Intelligent children and yes, children of rich people go to these schools. Two sons of Prince Charles, for example, studied at Eton.

In 1940s Britain, the choice of rich people were either sending their children to one of those "public" schools or "private tuition". ( Again, Brits do not use the term "home schooled")

  2. They went to private schools like Eton and Harrow which charge a lot of money.

Strangely they are always refered to as public schools but only the rich can afford to send their children there

  3. well seeing as the only schools in that period were private, it must have been the rich kids who went to them
