During the 1920's, when a telegram was sent from one station to another, how was it then delivered to its final recipient?

Example: Bob goes to the telegraph station in Boston in 1921 and needs to send a telegram to Jim in New York. They take the message and tranmit it to their New York telegraph station. How does it get from there to Jim?

  1. A person employed by the telegraphic dept goes and personally delivers the written message.

  2. They were delivered by messenger, if someone paid for that service.   They also were mailed to the recipient from the telegraph office.   But by 1921, the telegraph office may have phoned it to the recipient if they had a phone.  I magine that there were a variety of delivery options the sender could choose, depending on how much they were willing to spend.
