  1. Both of their civilizations died out.

  2. The most obvious similarity, of course, is their architecture.  Their carved images show similar styles of dress and personal appearance.  They also show similar facial characteristics.

Their writing, too, looks like it sprung from common roots.

Their choice of remote locations and the absence of wheeled vehicles, despite well-built road systems, is another factor in common.

The practice of mumifying their dead, conducting human sacrifices, etc. are all prevalent throughout the pre-columbian civilizations.

It almost looks as if the three main pre-columbian civilizations just blend into eachother at the edges like the differing colors in a fade-out paint job - going from the Inca to the south, through the Maya in the middle and on up to the Aztec in the north.  I think they all came from the same roots and whatever differences evolved between them did so due to the differences in their environments and the living conditions created by those envirnoments - the mountain-based, high-altitude Incas, the jungle-dwelling Mayas and the desert-dwelling Aztecs.

  3. they were not alike. the mesoamerican civilizations built pyramids where as the pyramids that exist in peru were constructed by the predecessors of the incas. the maya held a complex writing while the incas did not have a true writing, but a knotted system of calculations similar to an abacus. while both practiced sacrifices, each culture had different reasons for the practice. the two culture were also different architecturally in that the incas built monumental highly geometric structures often dangling over dangerous precipaces. mesoamerican structures are far less intricate.
