  1. Is this series of questions for an essay that you are supposed to be writing? lol no matter happy to help. They were treated in much the same way as troops are treated today. They are after all in command.


  2. In WW 1 there were different nationalities with different military traditions, so troops of each nationality were treated differently by their higher command.

    For example, the Austro-Hungarian Empire had troops from many ethnic groups of the empire from various social classes; the senior leadership on the other hand tended to be from the aristocratic classes. Similarly with the Tsarist Russian army, where the troops were peasant-based but the commanders from upper-classes.

    As a generalization (and be careful with generalizations), the way high command would have treated their soldiers would be a reflection of their societies. Oppressive societies could expect their soldiers to be treated badly by their commanders, while volunteer or professional armies would have been treated better.
