How ? where and when did the first police force come into existence?

I remember reading was actually businesses that hired "men " to protect their belongings and to make workers work.Is this true , does anyone know?

It has been discovered that even cave people had a system of laws and enforcement.  They had what was later called common law and if one family or tribe offended another then the leaders would hash it and the tribe leaders of the offender would dole out his punishment.

From what I remember from school (many, many moons ago), the first organized (keyword) police force was formed by Sir Robert Peel in England. Basically, a night watchmen service. There's actually a police force not too far from Toronto called Peel.
