Question:

How/where can I find a horse?

I read an article about horse slaughter and how they kill foals, yearlings, pregnant mares...etc. My friends went to an auction for horses being sold to slaughter houses. I've been around horses my whole life and I have $25000 to spend on X number of horses. I want to get horses directly from the auction, because horses in the rescue center are already safer than those for slaughter. Are there any auctions like this that you know of? How could I figure out where to find an auction (I already tried Google)?

PS: I already asked this but I researched and still can't find anything... help (again) please?

  1. if u live in the southeastern part of the counrty...u can look at a stablemates magazine...or go to stablemates.com and look at the auctions they have listed there. Im in GA, and we have several around here. You can also contact you're local Department of Agriculture....they auction off emaciated, abused and unwanted horses. Canadian and Mexican farms are the only places you are going to find legal slaughter houses now...maybe Minnesota. You can always get a PMU foal...a lot of people dont realize that a majority of those foals go to slaughter after an extended period of being up for adoption. I have 3 PMU horses...i got mine from prismpmufoals.com

good luck...and bless you for wanting to save unwanted horses!!

  2. Well at the stables silly goose.

  3. Try asking local horse barns or see if there are any other websites with auctions. Slaughter buyers go to any auction.

  4. You have to go to actual horse auctions to find that. Talk to some other horse people around you. Someone is bound to know about one or more. Also, have you considered taking PMU foals? Most end up at auctions going to slaughter.

(You may even be able to contact them and find out where they get their horses.)

  5. Not sure where you are located but in California (Southern), there's the Bakersfield Horse Sale (Held on the FIRST Monday of every month.  Mike's Auction in Riverside area every Saturday night...

I know a friend of mine used to frequent an auction yard in PA, but not sure where it is.

  6. You have to find sale barns in your area.  Most small towns have them, and that's where horses get "dumped", or are waiting for the first $50 to claim them.  I've been to auctions all over Iowa....Story City, Shenandoah, Stuart, Belle Plaine, and Winterset....just about any direction you go you can find an auction barn.

However, you need to know what you're doing with these horses before bringing them home...if you don't even know where to find a horse to rescue, chances are you don't know enough about horses yet.  Make sure that your concern for the horse includes concern that you will educate yourself enough so the horses do not get injured or injure you, and plan to spend a lot of money taking care of these horses, not just on their initial price.  You can buy a lot of $100 horses that will require thousands of dollars of vet bills not to mention feed....so make sure your plan includes all of that, with a few surprises to boot.

  7. Can you provide the necessary facilities that will contribute to their needs?  Horses are really delicate.  They require regular worming, good feed, a spacious area for natural activity, hoof care, tooth filing, routinely clean bedding, the provision of gelding intact males, because if you don't they will seriously compete with each other with reality of serious injury.  Here, where I live, there is  a wonderfully maintained property that accepts older, horses, and provides for their care from donations.  When an animal can no longer be self sufficient, and is quite old, they are kept in an individual pasture, and sometimes euthanized.  They are then buried, and recognized with a brass plaque incorporated on a stone foundation, which is part of some of the property set aside for interment.  I applaud your interest in wanting to provide care for these abandoned horses, however, be sure you are fully aware of what you will have to provide for them.  Death is not the enemy.  Insensitivity is always unacceptable,

so before you become involved in horse rescue, be sure your resources will be adequate.

  8. May I suggest that you put that money to good use.

I know your intentions are good but there are people and groups that are already doing what you are attempting to do and believe me, it is not easy.  Perhaps leave the obtaining to the rescue groups and adopt some of the horses and make a donation to them with the money.  This way, through networks already established, they can rescue more horses from the auctions or other sources.  If you do a search for horse slaughter, you should find links that will say where these kill buyers go to obtain their horses.   You did not mention where you live, but here are the links to some rescue groups that could use your assistance to place horses so that they can save more as well as donations so they can keep their efforts going.

I'm unsure of your researching skills but there is plenty of information out there.

Like I said, I know your intentions are good...but although the rescued horses are safe..they still need homes so these experienced rescue organizations can go and rescue more!!

  9. ask alot of people, like everyone you meet. ive been to alot in the south but like none of them have any websites or fliers or anything theyre kinda hard to find if you dont know where to look

  10. http://www.rollahorseauction.net/

You will find some of the best horses alive there sell worth the money as well as a bunch of untrained horses practically free.  I'm probably going to take two registered, good sound 4 and 5 yr olds to the next sale there.  I don't expect to get $500 for both.

    Edit:

The way feed and fuel prices are on the rise that 25k might not feed and take care of 2 horses for their lifetimes.

Find the lobby that's trying to open the slaughter houses again and donate there.  It sounds cruel but is the only solution to the mess the lawyers have made of the horse industry in the US.

If one US citizen opened a new slaughter house and hired good lawyers he could turn things around.  I'm old and fought my battles, it's a chore for someone young and fearless.

Killer buyers can afford to pick and choose now, they get to haul good fat healthy sound young horses and don't have to mess with cripples and such.

A horse is more livestock than house pet and should be treated as such.  A few ignorant emotional ppl in power have made life miserable for the majority of horses as the cost to keep them exceeds owner's incomes.  I'll sell mine for whatever they bring before starving them or shorting them on care.  I used to keep 8 and now hope to be able to keep 2.  The way it looks I may have to park the vehicles and use a horse soon.

  11. You can find any horse you like on http://www.dreamhorse.com . Thet is where I go all the time to look! Hope I could help.
